You must be 17 or over*

*Unless you are disabled and receive mobility allowance, in which case you must be 16 or over

Your eyesight also has to meet a minimum standard (you have to be able to read a car number plate from 20.5m).  If you can’t, a trip to the opticians is in order before you get behind the wheel.

where to start?

Your first job is to get a provisional driving licence.  You must have one of these before you can start learning to drive.  You can either apply for one online at www.dvla.gov.uk, or pick up a D1 form from the Post Office. 

The provisional licence allows you to legally drive on public roads only if you are supervised by someone aged 21 or over, who has held a full EC/EEA licence for at least 3 years.  This stands until you pass your driving test.
